Day Two

We actually got on the road today before 8am. . .a feat for us.  The roads were dry, temps in the 50s.  Cleveland was actually sunny.  What's with that?  Along the lake shore were a number of water named villages to we wandered on US 6 for a bit; we paid for those four bonus locations at day's end when we found ourselves riding after dark, something we decided to avoid on this trip if we could. The Chicago area was warm and sunny, too.  Between Cleveland and Chicago, however, there was variety.  Some drizzle, and for a while, some heavy downpour.  For those of you who might be concerned, Robin did not get a bit wet!  Every stop today involved long question and answer periods.  Friendly and curious people of all sorts wanted to know about the sidecar, especially how they are to drive and how much one costs.  Most folk direct questions to Robin, however, as she just looks more likely to be engaging.  And, she is the one who climbs into the thing.  In central Ill., we came across a guy who was buying ice with his HD sidecar rig and his two young kids in the hack.  We were in that town, on US 6 because we had jumped off I-80 near Joliet to avoid a 45 minute construction delay.  Temps actually got to 78 and at crawling speed, dressed for chilly weather, I was roasting.  A little of this, a little of that.  Long distance motorcycling guarantees that you get some of whatever is available. Just got back to the room from the pool; Rum and Coke seems to be in order. Tonight's digs are in Davenport, Ia., some 625 from Erie.  Here, the Mississippi looks its normal grand self.  Later, this same water will drench the Cajun cotton and cane fields. Tomorrow, we'll try to get going around 8 and log another 6-700 miles.  Lows tonight in Cheyenne will be in the 30s.  Hummmmm.Getting to the California Redwoods by Sunday afternoon is the goal.

  1. Robin: Always love crossing the Mississippi--seems like we're really in a different place once we do that! Met some really friendly people on the road yesterday--and weather was O.K. (of course being in the sidecar helped in the rain showers and I still have the lid on---would like to get that off some time soon!) Traffic jam in Chicago (of course) and I waved to you Larry!

  2. If you have time stop by the Ames Monument, between Cheyenne & Laramie, just off I-80. It was a bonus at last years IBR5000 & MN2010.
